Panamanian President and Several High-Ranking Officials to Converge on Dubai for Global Business Forum on Latin America 2018

High-level forum to gather current and former heads of state, ministers, decision makers and industry experts who will explore new avenues of economic cooperation between Latin America and GCC

Dubai, UAE – The second edition of the Global Business Forum on Latin America will see the participation of current and former heads of state, ministers, decision makers and industry experts who will gather in Dubai to discuss and explore new avenues of economic cooperation between the GCC and promising Latin American markets.

Organised by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the two-day forum will be held February 27th-28th 2018 under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Bearing the theme “Connect – Collaborate – Grow”, the high-level forum will provide a unique opportunity to listen to global thought leaders engage in inspirational, thought-provoking, and future-focused dialogues that shape the future of governments and business, while showcasing Dubai’s potential as a global gateway for Latin American companies.

The 2018 edition will host H.E. Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez, President of Panama; H.E. Vicente Fox, President of Centro Fox and Former President of Mexico; and H.E. Cesar Gaviria, and Former President of Colombia, along with several ministers, government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs and industry experts from Latin America, the GCC and beyond.

The Panamanian president will lead a delegation from the Central American country which includes First Lady H.E. Lorena Castillo García de Varela; H.E. Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado, Vice President and Chancellor; H.E. Augusto Arosemena Moreno, Minister of Commerce and Industry; and H.E. Dulcidio De La Guardia, Minister of Economy and Finance.

Other high-level attendees include: H.E. Manuel Gonzalez Sanz, Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; H.E. Gustavo Leite, Paraguay’s Minister of Industry and Commerce; and H.E. Lea Giménez, Minister of Finance, Paraguay; H.E. Pablo Campana, Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Trade; H.E. Arnaldo Castillo, Minister of Economic Development of Honduras; H.E. Hugo Rivera, the Dominican Republic’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs; and H.E. Rogelio Garza Garza, Undersecretary of Industry & Commerce at the Mexican Ministry of Economy; and H.E. Jairo Estrada, Guatemala’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.

H.E. Hamad Buamim, Dubai Chamber’s President and CEO, said: “The high calibre of speakers and participants joining the second edition of the Global Business Forum on Latin America is a reflection of the event’s significance, as well as growing global interest in Dubai as a preferred trade and investment hub. The forum, the largest event of its kind in the Middle East, will provide valuable insights and unique perspectives on Latin America’s future growth prospects and identify attractive business opportunities opening up within the region’s key sectors which companies in the UAE and GCC can benefit from.”

Forecasting Future Growth

The Forum kicks off with a welcome note from H.E. Majid Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman, Dubai Chamber, followed by a panel discussion on Latin America’s growth potential, which will bring together H.E. Susana Malcorra, Head of the High-Level Council and Former Foreign Minister of Argentina; Marcos Troyjo, Director of BRICLab at Columbia University, USA; and Fernando Galletti de Queiroz, CEO of Minerva Foods in Brazil.

H.E. Vicente Fox, President of Centro Fox and Former President of Mexico, will speak about Latin America’s place in the global economy during a thought-provoking session. The forum will also feature a panel examining Latin America’s fast-growing tourism markets which will be joined by Maria Claudia Lacouture, Executive Director of AmCham Colombia and the country’s Former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism; along with Gerald Lawless, Chairman of the World Travel and Tourism Council.

H.E. Manuel Gonzalez Sanz, Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; and H.E. Mohamad Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar will share their input on the growth potential of Latin America’s renewable energy sector, while H.E. Augusto Arosemena, Panama’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, will join Fahad Al Gergawi, CEO of Dubai FDI, and Paulo Carreno King, CEO of ProMexico, in a session titled “All Change - Opening Doors to Trade in a Fast-Changing World.”

H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World will join a session titled “The Building Blocks of Business”, and a special one-on-one conversation with H.E. Juan Carlos Varela, President of Panama will focus on plans to leverage the country’s strategic position between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to become a modern hub for global trade and investment.

Exploring Synergies and Investment Opportunities

The Forum’s second day kicks off with a session joined by H.E. Cesar Gaviria, Former President of Colombia, who will discuss how Latin America’s new governments are working hard to rebuild the trust of both citizens and investors.

A panel examining Dubai’s role in supporting Latin America’s economy growth will be joined by H.E. Hamad Buamim, President and CEO of Dubai Chamber; Monica de Greiff, Executive President of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce in Colombia and CEO of Itau BBA International in the UK; and Ahmed bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of the Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre Authority (DMCC).

In addition, the Forum will look at the fast-growing halal economy and the potential for future cooperation in this area between the UAE, Brazil and other major agricultural exporters in Latin America. The session will bring together H.E. Blairo Maggi, Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply; H.E. Abdulla Mohammed Al Awar, CEO of the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre; and Patricio Rohner, CEO of UAE-based OneFoods.

The upcoming forum is part of a series of Global Business Forums, launched in 2013 by Dubai Chamber to highlight investment opportunities in key emerging markets across Africa, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Latin America.
